There are very few smokers who haven't already tried to quit. Most attempts to quit smoking fail because of the intense discomfort that accompanies the effort. Smokers have come to associate a certain level of comfort and relaxation with the smoking ritual and evidence suggests that there is, indeed, a nominal narcotic effect from the nicotine. Side effects of the more brutal practices followed by conventional smoke loss programs include weight gain, irritability, sleeplessness, anxiety and even limited loss of social function (largely perceived - not real).

Why do we smoke?

There are no rational reasons, of course… only explanations of why the addiction exists.

Smoking starts as a peer social pressure in most instances, is reinforced by the social experience - and eventually becomes a physically engrained habit reinforced 20 to 60 times a day by "lighting up." At some point, though we don't realize it - we come to perceive of ourselves as "smokers." Being a smoker has become a normal part of our everyday habit pattern and we accept that at the subconscious level - irrespective of what our friends, social surroundings, public broadcasting and our own "logical self" tells us. We know it's bad for us. We know it will compromise our quality of life as we get older. Though we deny it - we know that it will eventually contribute to an earlier death. But because it is a continually reinforced part of our daily activity… the smoking habit stays with us.

What we must change is the subconscious perceptions, the uneasy acceptance and daily living patterns that cause us to gradually poison our bodies throughout the day.
